7 Ways To Start Eating Healthy on a Budget

Swimsuit season is rapidly approaching, and many of us are remembering those old New Years Resolutions we made a handful of weeks ago. We were going to lose weight, get in shape, and look great at the pool or lake or beach with our friends and family, right? Well, maybe we forgot. But it’s never too late to begin losing weight, even if it’s daunting.

Today we’re sharing some well-researched tips and tricks for starting today with your weight loss – while removing the barrier of increased cost that is sometimes our excuse.

There’s no doubt that it can be cheaper to eat unhealthy foods. Fast food can’t be beaten for its price and convenience… or its calories. We can show you a few ways to begin eating healthier without giving up convenience or handing over your whole wallet.

How to Start Eating Healthy on a Budget

1. Always First: Water
The very first step in any weight loss journey is to begin drinking water like crazy. This can also be a totally free health upgrade on so many biological levels. Water is almost always provided free in your home or workplace, so pull out a water bottle or tumbler you love and carry it everywhere full of water. Not only is it free, but it will help you eat less and therefore save even more.

2. Small Fast Food Upgrades
You don’t have to entirely ditch your fast food order at first, but start tinkering with it. Order the small version, which will save you dollars and calories. When possible substitute the more questionable food items with healthier ones.  Can they substitute fries for something a little more healthy?  If you can’t or simply decide you NEED those fries, eat half of them instead of the whole thing.

3. Pack Lunch
Making your own lunch is not only cost-effective but usually healthier. Sandwiches, leftovers, or soups can be easy and fresh. Even if you start by bringing lunch only one day a week, you may start to see weight loss and improved health & budget.

4. Meal Plan & Prep
Meal prepping your week or a few days at a time can save you serious dollars in the grocery store. Buying a bulk or family size can sometimes save money, and if you cook larger batches at once and spread it into multiple containers for lunches & dinners throughout the week you will find yourself ordering pizza far less often. This can also ensure that you buy and use cheap, healthy produce effectively without it going bad – another win for your waist and wallet.

5. Use a Variety of Cooking Methods
Don’t get caught in the rut of believing you only have one cooking method when it comes to food.  Too many meal prep advocates may cook chicken breast and vegetables the same way for the whole week.  Even if you’re stuck with chicken and veggies remember you can crockpot, bake, BBQ, pan fry in light oil, and even casserole.  Don’t forget the variety of spice options as well. The possibilities are endless!

6. Share
If portioning is part of the issue, splitting your entrée, snack, or dessert with a friend or family member can cut the cost of whatever you’re ordering and also help you to easily eat a little less than you normally would.

7. Farmer’s Market
You can find healthy fruits, veggies, herbs, and more at a local farmer’s market for less than many supermarket grocery stores. This is an easier way to stock up on fresh snacks and to try new things without that higher price tag.

Start today with a few cost-effective swaps to get healthier and you’ll find your waist shrinking while your wallet stays fat!
